General Description

Earth Learning, the South Dade Economic Development Council, Financial Permaculture Institute, and Miami Dade College will host community investment/financial experts,

Permaculture designers and sustainability entrepreneurs

for this dynamic gathering and Integrative learning experience

to begin building resiliency in our community.

We will address economic and ecological challenges of

the 21st century as we explore creating money cycling, local investments, and forward-looking businesses that optimize the local natural systems and human capacities to implement models of regenerative business and local resiliency!

Event Design

At the end of January, 2013 Financial Permaculture and Local Business Summit will host community investment and financial experts, Permaculture designers and regenerative entrepreneurs for this dynamic gathering and integrative learning experience of building community resiliency. Participants will learn tools and skills to address the economic and ecological challenges of 21st century as we explore creating forward looking businesses, resource cycling, local investments, and optimizing the local natural systems and human capacities to implement models of regenerative business and local resiliency.

The event is both regional, national and international. There are four tracks of information/experience within the event:

  1. Permaculture

  2. Finance/Business

  3. Community Economic Development

  4. Local Business Development (broken into 4 specific types of businesses)

Each of these tracks will be taught on a meta level (applicable and replicable within the US, and relevant abroad), and then on a ground level using local examples from the Miami community.

Thus our target audience can fit within each of these tracks, including people interested in developing any of the 4 specific businesses within their own communities. The name Financial Permaculture has an international market. At our largest event we had 32 states and 7 countries represented at the event, along with 1/4 of the participants from the local community. Diversity is key to this event - we'll want to market this richness of potential cross pollination.

The Four Businesses

During the event these 4 local businesses will be designed: (see Place & Businesses for further descriptions)

  1. Commercial Permaculture Farm

  2. Farm-to-Table Café (including mobile market)

  3. Commercial Kitchen (including mobile processing kitchen)

  4. Local Foods Distribution Network & Online Market

Financial Permaculture Summit 2008

The first Financial Permaculture Summit, which occurred in the midst of the first wave of economic crisis in October of 2008, and since then the community of Hohenwald has been moving swiftly towards creating a new Green Economy based firmly in the principles of Permaculture. Through community meetings, engagement with the local Chamber of Commerce, city government, and county officials, the town of Hohenwald and Lewis County are working to create a participatory design for transition away from an economically and environmentally unsustainable way of doing business, and moving towards a localized economy where the towns folks hold decision making power and the responsibility that comes with it is in their own hands.

What kind of people should come?

This Convergence is designed to be an inter-generational, trans-cultural, and interfaith opportunity to learn how to leverage local resources, diversity and talent to create business opportunities that give back to the local community, bio-region, country, and the world. Attendees will include lawyers and bankers, small business owners, philanthropists, community organizers, investors, financial planers, accountants, construction workers, permaculture designers, financial advisers, city council members, local officials and students of ecology, education and business, and more.

Are there any pre-requisites required to coming?

While a background and understanding of permaculture as well as business is not required, it is helpful.

What is the format and educational style?

The education style for this event will be content driven participatory design. We will be providing key content from experts in financial planing, investment, ethanol production and engineering, green construction & natural building, cooperative legal structures, and more. We will also be utilizing the knowledge and skills of participants using open space technology and design simulations.

What is Financial Permaculture?

Financial Permaculture defined, takes a whole ecosystem approach to economics. Financial Permaculture strives towards total economic return - where the entire system and its parts are optimized. It is a design tool, a piece of appropriate information technology, that applies efficient designs to generate the least amount of waste for the highest yield, taking into account the true social and ecological costs within a local economy. The principles of Financial Permaculture can be implemented in communities across the world to transition economic power towards productive localized economies that thrive whilst supporting the natural infrastructure they exist within.
