Course Inspiration

The First International Certification of the Caribbean,

in Sustainable Living Design and Permaculture is about to arrive! We are very excited of you taking part in this extraordinary experience, happening from November 22 to December 07, 2009.


Course Description

Live in community with your fellow students in the U Najil Ek Balam Cabins at Yucatn Peninsula, México (20Ôø‡53Ôø‡34Ôø‡N, 88Ôø‡08Ôø‡31Ôø‡O) for two weeks. Develop a self sustainable project, enjoy a delicious veggie menu and restoring Ôø‡TemascalesÔø‡.

And the cherry on the cake, Earn your International Certification in Self sustainable Design and Permaculture upon attending all sessions of this class and completing the final design project. Start your Designer Practice in Sustainability!

Our Certification consists of a 100 Class hours, between Theory and Practices, and is based in the original 72 hours certification course developed by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren. Our program includes 28 extra hours with material that in our experience is essential to make the transition into Permacultural living. As well as visits to the Ek Balam archeological site and Xcanché cenote (underground pond).


Course Topics

In class we focus on Areas such as: Principles and Ethics of Permaculture, Design, Appropriate Technology, Natural Building, Communities, Ancestrality and Spirituality, Sustainable Economy, Ecovillages, Ecocenter, and Ecohoods, and more.


Schedule & Program

Class starts at nine in the morning, however, various activities in our program start at 7:00 a.m. We finish between 7:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. depending on the day. We can send you the program via e-mail if you ask for it or you can look it up on our web page (soon). All participants are required to sign a Release of Liability form prior to attending a class.


What to Bring

-Sturdy Shoes and/or field and rain Boots Ôø‡just in case-

-Jacket or long sleeves, as light as you consider proper for you

-Rain gear

-swimsuit for the cenote and temascal

-Flip flops

-Earth friendly sunscreen and bug repellent if needed

-Flashlight/lantern and extra batteries, since you canÔø‡t get those easily here

-Blanket for cooler nights

-Towel and biodegradable sanitary napkins in case you might need them

-Thermos or recyclable water bottle

-Sun hat

-Big handkerchief or Ôø‡paliacateÔø‡

-Small pack to carry stuff

-Gear for taking notes (paper, pencils, pens...)

-Musical instruments

-Seeds, articles for barter and sale

-Items to donate to the community

-Camera

-Enthusiasm, patience, sense of humor, and goodwill!

First Permaculture Design Certification of the Caribbean

in Sustainable Living Design and Permaculture

Investment

Course tuition is of $1,300 USD and we ask for $400 USD in advance to save your place. Fees paid in full before the start date of the course on Nov 22. All fees are Non Refundable, please plan your attendance accordingly! Once you place your deposit, scan you bank's transaction receipt and send it to casasanarte@hotmail.com along with your filled registration form, or with a file with the info we ask for in the registration form, in an e-mail. We will contact you by phone or e-mail to confirm your enrollment.


Reception

The appointment is on November 22nd at the Eco-Hotel U-Najil Ek Balam Cabins, from 13:00 hours, the whole day will be for reception and project presentation or for sharing participants experiences. We have meal and dinner menu if you feel like it, at 14:00 and 19:00 hours respectively...


How to Get There

From Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, Mérida and surrounding areas, you can take a bus straight into Ek Balam town. You can also take one into Valladolid (25 km from Ek Balam) and get to Ek Balam from there. Or go to Temozn town from Valladolid, and take a -colectivo- from there.

Once in Ek Balam you will be in the park (which is the center of the town), and from there you can walk the block and half it takes to get to U Najil cabins. Anyone there can tell you where, but right by the park you will see Kaxan Xuul's diner, you can ask there too, since we will be waiting for you.


Food

It is included in your fee, it's Vegetarian and we will have it at U Najil's dining room, in the park's Maya Diner or at Kaxan Xuul Ecovillage project, depending on the program.


Accommodations

We will be staying in Neo Maya style cabins, for 4 persons each in single beds or shared king size bed. Depending on your reservation date, you can save which would be your preference. You can also experiment, and sleep on a hammock, we will have some available.

Each cabin has electricity, toilet and shower with hot water.

Weather

In November Ôø‡ December, usually, temperature at night goes from 7 to 12 Ôø‡C, and during the day it can go from 27 to 32 Ôø‡C. There can be sudden isolated showers, remaining from hurricane season.

Facilitators & Instructors

Maria Ros

Maria is a Wardrobe and Set designer, Bioenergetics and Body Psichotherapist, and Permaculture Designer having studied in Bolivia and the United States. She has studied some Permaculture specialties in France and México. She is the Mexican representative of The Latin-American Institute of Permaculture, She is the Director of Ecodanza TM,President of Ecoaldea Gratitud A.C.and co-director of Casa Sanarte. Her main interest is to get Human beings and Nature's needs together in order to create new ways of looking at Natural sanctuaries and human settlements, that's why, She has been marring permaculture and human development and developing educational programs for all ages for the last 15 years, and for the last 6 years, the Yucatn peninsula has been the place in which She has been creating permacultural and emotional-developed communities...






Claudio Madaune

Claudio has completed advanced studies in Geography in Chile and France. He has studied various subjects in Permaculture Norway ,USA and Chile. He is a founding member of the Darién Foundation, He has lived for 8 years at the Sasard Integrated Reserve located in the Darien rainforest (Colombia), He has been the representative for the northern part of South America at the Executive Council of ENA (Ecovillages Network of the Americas) between 1999 and 2003, at present he is chairman of the ENA advisory committee and member of the Norwegian NGO, Change the World. He has lived for 2 years at the Hurdalsjen kolandsby, the first ecovillage in Norway, and has moved since may 2007 to Folds Education Center in Fyresdal, Telemark, where he is in charge of the development of the project Ôø‡Fiskevollen, Inspiration Center for Sustainable DevelopmentÔø‡, and participate as well in the creation of another ecovillage on the norwegian mountains of Telemark.



Christopher Nesbitt

Christopher has farmed in Belize for over 20 years. He has worked in agroforestry and cacao for much of the last 20 years and serves on the board of directors of Maya Mountain Research Farm, and is the on site manager. He also designs and installs renewable energy systems in rural areas, marine protected areas and designs and installs photovoltaic pumping systems.
